College Tips – What To Do If You Can’t Get A Work-Study Job
Some strategies for studying work far better than other methods. We are going to share some of our recommendations for which study methods are worth your time and energy to invest in learning.
How will I benefit by changing this habit? (E.g. I will feel better about myself; I will be more successful; when I respect myself and think I am deserving, others will respect me more and also think I am deserving; I will be happier when I stand up for myself; I will gain confidence; I will gain friends that accept me for myself; I will gain friends that have similar values as me). Knowing the benefits will motivate your teen to stay on track when the going gets tough. This will solidify the reason the old behaviour needs to be changed.
If your teen reports a problem to you, remember that you are her best resource. You may not have all the answers but you know how to get help. Encourage her to bring questions, issues, or problems to you for discussion as soon as possible after the babysitting job. As an adult, your judgment and life experiences are important to help your teen make decisions on how to handle situations. She will most likely report a problem concerning a child’s behavior that she can’t handle. Or she might tell you the parents asked her to do more than she was able to do. You can help your child learn to refuse future babysitting jobs with this family.
A great tool for learning is language exchanges. You will find this in newspapers and magazines or the internet. This is a more informal learning technique. Here, you learn by conversing informally rather than following a curriculum.
Visual – Visual learners use pictures, colours and diagrams to learn. Try using different colour highlighters when highlighting important aspects of your notes. Other techniques include relating images to notes or remembering notes by placing them into diagrams.
Wednesday’s session (my fifth attempt at writing for an uninterrupted 2 hours) turned into a journal writing session. I really wanted to focus on getting a grip on the direction I should take and so I wrote out my goals and some thoughts related to those goals. Less than halfway in, I decided I had my stuff figured out and I got distracted. I ended up on Facebook, dwelled on some things. It look me a few minutes (read: 20) to get back on track, and then I started writing this post on making the most of your writing session. I know firsthand!

The Public Library. Libraries are the ultimate study environment. That IS what they are designed for. Most libraries have individual cubicles, couches, and tables to meet individual needs. Research can be done immediately. Libraries have computers and have areas for personal computers as well. There are generally small rooms for group work. Libraries have copy machines; and many now are equipped with vending machines for snacking needs.
